Mumbai: Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) has proposed temporarily discontinuing 265 weekly international departure slots at Terminal 2 from October 25, reducing international departure capacity by about 33 per cent amid operational changes linked to Terminal 1 redevelopment.
The proposal, communicated to airlines, covers 46 carriers operating 770 weekly international departure slots from T2. IndiGo faces the largest proposed reduction, with 74 weekly departures, followed by Air India with 33. Akasa Air and Air India Express could lose 11 and seven departures respectively, while SpiceJet faces a proposed reduction of five.
Among international carriers, Emirates and Etihad Airways are each facing a proposed cut of 10 weekly departures.
MIAL has asked airlines to identify the slots they wish to temporarily discontinue by 4:00 p.m. on October 6. If an airline fails to respond by the deadline, the airport operator has said it will determine the slots to be withdrawn based on operational requirements, airport capacity and implementation considerations.
The final plan will be shared with airlines and stakeholders after consultation.
The proposed reductions come amid discussions over relocating airline operations during Terminal 1 redevelopment. The temporary curbs could affect international connectivity from Mumbai during the winter schedule, although MIAL has not specified how long the restrictions will remain.
Airlines are expected to seek clarity on alternative arrangements, passenger handling and the restoration of affected slots once redevelopment-related constraints ease.
The proposed changes remain subject to consultation, with the airport operator expected to coordinate implementation with affected airlines accordingly.
