Mumbai: Maharashtra Forest Minister Ganesh Naik has announced that the state is considering introducing a reward scheme to encourage individuals and organisations involved in protecting mangrove ecosystems. He also warned of strict action against illegal encroachments, constructions and dumping of debris in mangrove areas.
Naik was speaking at the ‘Mangrove Foundation Awards Ceremony – 2026’ organised at the Y B Chavan Centre in Mumbai on the occasion of International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem.
Naik said protecting mangroves has become essential for conserving coastal biodiversity, including birds, fish, turtles and other marine species. He said the Forest Department is committed to achieving plantation targets under initiatives such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ call for large-scale tree plantation.
Taking note of complaints regarding debris dumping and unauthorised constructions in Mumbai’s mangrove areas, Naik directed officials to verify encroachments using satellite and Google imagery dating back to 2005 in collaboration with Chennai University. He said strict action would be initiated against violations.
Milind Mhaiskar said Maharashtra’s mangrove cover has increased from 222 sq km to 315 sq km (31,500 hectares). He highlighted the importance of mangroves in carbon storage, biodiversity conservation and supporting local livelihoods.
During the event, the Mangrove Foundation Awards 2026 were presented to individuals and groups for outstanding contributions towards conservation, eco-tourism, livelihood initiatives and environmental awareness. Winners were felicitated with certificates, mementoes and cash prizes.
The event was attended by senior forest officials, including Additional Chief Secretary (Forests) Milind Mhaiskar, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Forest Force) M Srinivas Rao, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Srinivas Reddy and Mangrove Foundation Executive Director N R Praveen.
