5 must-see ‘Dahi Handis’ in Thane

Thane: Thane, dubbed the Pandhari of Dahi Handis, is set to showcase some of the district’s grandest human pyramids this year. With civic elections looming, political parties are pulling out all the stops to draw crowds on August 16, the ‘Dahi Handi’ festival.

Late Anand Dighe's Dahihandi: Commissioned by late Shiv Sena leader Anand Dighe at Tembhinaka in Thane, this ‘Dahi Handi’ is now backed by deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde. The Dahi Handi offers prize money ranging from Rs 1lakh to Rs 1.5lakh. 

Anand Charitable Trust: Supported by former parliamentarian Rajan Vichare, currently with Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), has a laser show as a special attraction during the night.

Sanskriti Yuva Pratishthan – Sponsored by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik at TMC school number 44, Vartaknagar. This year, 111 Govindas from Spain are expected to participate here. This Dahi Handi is known to set world records.

Sankalp Pratishthan- Organized for 20 years, this ‘Dahi Handi’ is supported by former legislature Ravindra Phatak of the Shinde group. Artists from Delhi are expected to present special art works at this ‘Dahi Handi’ at Sankalp Chowk, Raheja Garden, Thane.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Handi:  Organized through Maharashtra Navnirman Sena leader Avinash Jadhav. This ‘Dahi Handi’ is also visited by MNS chief Raj Thackeray.
