Traffic jam forces woman to deliver child in auto

top-news

Ulhasnagar: The grim reality of traffic congestion and inadequate emergency access on Indian urban roads came to the fore in Ulhasnagar on October 6, when a pregnant woman was forced to deliver her baby inside an auto-rickshaw while being taken to hospital.

The incident occurred around 2.30 pm in Ulhasnagar-3, when the woman reportedly developed severe labour pains while travelling to a hospital. The auto-rickshaw carrying her became stuck in heavy traffic near Mayur Hotel, with long queues of vehicles bringing movement to a standstill.

With the hospital still some distance away and no immediate medical assistance available, the woman’s condition worsened. She eventually delivered the baby inside the three-wheeler on the stretch between Mayur Hotel and Sevasadan College.

The delivery reportedly took place without the benefit of proper medical facilities or trained medical personnel, highlighting the vulnerability of patients caught in traffic during medical emergencies. The mother and newborn were subsequently taken to Government Central Hospital, Ulhasnagar, where doctors and nurses admitted them for treatment. Both are reported to be stable.

Public outrage over traffic

The incident has sparked renewed concerns over the state of traffic management and emergency mobility in the city. Residents have pointed out that prolonged congestion can have serious consequences when ambulances or vehicles carrying critically ill patients are unable to move freely.

The episode has also raised questions about the lack of dedicated emergency corridors and effective traffic regulation on busy stretches. Residents are now urging authorities to take urgent measures to ease congestion, improve traffic management, and ensure that emergency vehicles and patients can reach hospitals without potentially life-threatening delays.
