Ulhasnagar: Panic gripped residents of Shivganga Park, a five-storey building in Punjabi Colony, Camp 3, Ulhasnagar, after two slabs collapsed consecutively from the fifth to the third floor. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident, which has raised fresh concerns over the structural safety of old buildings in the city.
The incident occurred when the slab of Flat No. 506 on the fifth floor collapsed onto Flat No. 406 on the fourth floor. Subsequently, the fourth-floor slab also gave way, crashing onto Flat No. 306 on the third floor. The successive collapses triggered panic among residents and raised concerns about the building’s structural stability.
Following the incident, personnel from the fire brigade, police, and Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation rushed to the spot to assess the situation and coordinate the response.
Considering the risk of further structural damage, the rescue team evacuated residents from the building as a precautionary measure. Preliminary information confirmed that no one was injured in the incident.
The municipal administration is inspecting the building to assess its condition and determine the necessary safety measures. Further action will depend on the findings of the inspection.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over the condition of ageing buildings in Ulhasnagar. Residents and local observers have stressed the need for timely structural audits and appropriate safety measures to prevent similar incidents.
The episode has also renewed calls for the authorities to identify potentially dangerous structures and take preventive action to safeguard residents. A detailed assessment of Shivganga Park’s structural stability is expected to help determine whether additional restrictions or remedial measures are required.
