ST to become fully electric by 2037: Pratap Sarnaik

Mumbai: The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has set a target to convert its entire fleet to electric buses by 2037, Transport Minister and MSRTC Chairman Pratap Sarnaik said.
Speaking at the 312th meeting of the ST Board of Directors held at the corporation’s headquarters, Sarnaik said the around 5,000 diesel buses that are expected to join the fleet will be the last diesel vehicles purchased by the corporation. The transition towards electric buses will be carried out in phases.
Currently, ST operates around 14,000 buses, including nearly 1,100 electric buses. Around 5,000 old buses will be scrapped in phases as per regulations, helping modernise the fleet and reduce dependence on diesel.
From 2027, old buses that have completed seven to eight years of service will be gradually converted into electric buses. The corporation will also procure new electric buses based on passenger requirements.
Sarnaik said charging stations and related electrical infrastructure are being developed simultaneously across depots. He added that the move would reduce fuel costs and create an environment-friendly public transport system, with the iconic red buses transforming into a “green e-Lalpari”.
