Kalyan: The Supreme Court cancelled the bail granted to accused persons, including Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre, in the Shastri Nagar Hospital doctor-nurse assault case and directed them to surrender before police within three days in the hearling held on September 28.

The matter was heard by a bench in Court No. 2 after the Maharashtra government challenged the Bombay High Court's order granting bail. According to Dr. Vaibhav’s lawyer, Abhinay Adsul, the court considered arguments concerning the assault on doctors and nurses at the hospital as well as 18 previous cases involving Mhatre.

Following the Supreme Court's order, Mhatre and the other accused will have to surrender before the police, the lawyer said.

The decision was welcomed by the father of the female doctor involved in the case. Dr. Baviskar said he has full faith in the judiciary and expressed hope that the proceedings would help ensure justice and a safer working environment for healthcare professionals.

“Doctors are there to serve patients. It is wrong to beat up doctors after an incident. Strict implementation of the law is necessary to curb such incidents,” Dr. Baviskar said.

The case is being heard on a fast-track basis at the Kalyan Court. According to Dr. Baviskar, the female doctor's testimony is scheduled to be recorded on October 6. Another accused, Sadhana Karande, had earlier been denied bail by the Kalyan Sessions Court.
