Seawoods: Union Bank of India officer Neha Rajivkumar Gupta, 36, died in a road accident on Palm Beach Road on the afternoon of Sunday, September 27 while returning home after attending office duty on her weekly holiday.

Gupta, who lived with her family in NRI Colony, Seawoods, was posted at the bank’s Regional Office in Vashi. Bank employees had reportedly been instructed to report for duty on Sunday, September 27.

According to available information, Gupta had informed officials that she could not attend work because no one was home to look after her children. She was subsequently asked to report to the office and attended duty.

After leaving the office around 1.30 pm, Gupta was travelling home in an auto-rickshaw. Near the Sarsole signal on Palm Beach Road, a speeding taxi allegedly rammed the rickshaw from behind, throwing her out and seriously injuring her.

She was rushed to D.Y. Patil Hospital, Nerul, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Nerul police registered a case against taxi driver Moin Asif Shaikh, 35, and arrested him. The taxi has also been taken into custody.

A bank employees’ organisation has demanded an impartial inquiry, alleging that Gupta was compelled to attend Sunday duty and questioning the circumstances surrounding the decision to call employees to work on a weekly holiday.
