Sanpada: A proposal by Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) to fell 111 trees and transplant 329 others for a planned underpass at Sanpada Palm Beach Road has sparked fierce opposition from citizens’ groups and environmentalists.

The proposed underpass, located opposite the Kesar Solitaire housing complex, would affect the Palm Beach belt, a Coastal Regulation Zone area known for its well-established tree cover that provides residents with fresh air and green spaces for walking and exercise.

NMMC has installed a notice board detailing the project’s environmental impact, prompting immediate protest from local residents who fear the loss of 440 trees will severely damage the area's ecology.

Satish Nikam, President of the Navi Mumbai Citizens Forum, said, “If the Municipal Corporation proceeds with large-scale tree cutting in the name of development, we will not remain silent. We have already begun corresponding with the Municipal Corporation and have also launched a signature campaign against this kind of environmental damage.”

A meeting held on January 28 at the Sanpada Ward Office saw citizens submit a formal memorandum opposing the proposal. The ward officer assured attendees that objections would be forwarded to concerned authorities for reconsideration.

Residents highlighted that Sanpada already experiences alarming Air Quality Index (AQI) levels, an issue previously flagged by the Bombay High Court. They contend that removing such a substantial number of trees would further deteriorate air quality and adversely impact public health in the locality.
