Navi Mumbai: In a bold move to elevate Navi Mumbai’s commuting experience from the ordinary to the world-class, the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO) has unveiled an ambitious metro plan.
The blueprint features a 76-kilometre network spread across six metro lines and more than 40 stations, promising to redefine urban travel for the rapidly growing city.
Part of the Comprehensive Mobility Plan, the six-line metro will span NMMC and PMC areas, connecting NAINA, Taloja, Navi Mumbai International Airport, CSMIA, and key city hubs.
In addition to the existing proposed Navi Mumbai metro line, namely 1A and 2. The CIDCO has proposed a new Metro line from Targhar railway suburban station, NAINA, to Navi Mumbai Airport. Besides, another metro line is proposed to connect International Corporate Park, Kharghar, to NAINA via Kalamboli.
“The metro network is built to handle the surge in commuters over the next 30 years. Prosperity comes with connectivity, and we’re now shifting from basic infrastructure to an economic master plan aligned with the Centre’s 2047 vision,” said a senior CIDCO official.
The CMP is part of the Comprehensive Transport Study (CTS) undertaken by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). “It is mandatory for the infrastructure projects to be part of the CMP when we approach the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for funds. So, we have included all the metro lines in CMP,” explained the official.
Meanwhile, CIDCO is awaiting cabinet approval for the detailed project reports of 3 proposed metro lines, including the 34.9 km “Gold Line” (Metro Corridor 8) from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, featuring around 20 stations.
Cabinet approval is pending for Metro Line 1A (Sagarsangam–Belapur) and Line 2 (Pendhar–Navi Mumbai International Airport East), both targeted for completion by 2031 to meet the projected 90 million airport passengers by 2030, an official said.
