Bhayandar: The Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), in collaboration with the international organization World Veterinary Service (WVS) and Mission Rabies, has successfully vaccinated 1,594 animals during the initial phase of its large-scale anti-rabies campaign. The four-day drive saw 95% of the vaccines administered to stray dogs, while the remaining 5% covered other animals such as cats.

Inaugurating the campaign, MBMC Commissioner and Administrator Radhabinod Sharma emphasized the civic body's commitment to creating a rabies-free community. The campaign comes in response to growing concerns, as nearly 1,500 to 2,000 people are bitten by dogs annually in Mira-Bhayandar.

“This campaign is a crucial step towards eliminating rabies from our city. With proper vaccination coverage, we can significantly reduce the risk of transmission,” said Dr. Vikram Niratle, MBMC’s Chief Veterinary Officer.

The drive has mobilized six teams — comprising MBMC and WVS personnel — each consisting of a veterinarian, three assistants, and a data collector. Teams are actively vaccinating stray animals across various city zones, while residents caring for community animals can also register their pets for free vaccination.

Dr. Niratle further added, “This year, for the first time, we have extended vaccinations to include stray cats as well, ensuring wider protection. In the previous year, we vaccinated nearly 9,800 dogs. This joint effort with WVS will continue over the next three months, with vaccination camps scheduled every Tuesday and Thursday across the city.”

The next phases of the campaign are set for June 24, 25, 26, and 29. MBMC has urged animal feeders, caretakers, volunteers, and all residents involved in community animal care to actively participate.

“Our goal is simple — a rabies-free Mira-Bhayandar. Public support is vital,” Dr. Niratle concluded.
