Brisbane: Megan Schutt became the third Australian woman to take 150 wickets in one-day internationals, reaching the milestone in the opening match of the three-game series against Bangladesh.
The right-arm pacer needed two wickets before the series and achieved the feat with two early strikes. She dismissed Fargana Hoque off the first ball of the series, then trapped Sarmin Sultana leg before wicket in the third over with a delivery that swung into the batter. The breakthrough gave Australia an early advantage after they chose to bowl first.
Schutt joins former fast bowler Cathryn Fitzpatrick and all-rounder Ellyse Perry in Australia’s group of women with at least 150 ODI wickets. Fitzpatrick leads with 180 wickets, followed by Perry on 166. Schutt further cements her place among them.
She is the 12th player overall to reach 150 wickets in women’s ODI cricket, according to an IANS report. Former India fast bowler Jhulan Goswami tops the list with 255 wickets.
Australia’s bowlers backed Schutt’s early breakthroughs with a disciplined performance to dismiss Bangladesh for 166. Annabel Sutherland led the attack with four wickets, while Ashleigh Gardner, Tahlia McGrath and Georgia Wareham took one apiece.
Ritu Moni was Bangladesh’s leading scorer with 45, the only individual innings to pass 30 for the visitors. The hosts’ control with the ball ensured Bangladesh could not build a total, giving Australia a start to the three-match series.
Schutt’s landmark adds another achievement to her career and places her alongside two of Australia’s most accomplished women’s ODI bowlers.
