Kharghar: As Maharashtra observes its annual tree plantation month this July, environmentalist and local green warrior Chhaya Taralekar, widely known as the Plantation Lady of Kharghar, has issued a timely appeal to ensure that tree planting efforts go beyond symbolism and lead to long-term ecological gains.
Taralekar, who has actively supported over 100 plantation drives this monsoon alone, emphasised that while citizens, students, corporates and institutions enthusiastically join plantation campaigns during July, many trees do not survive due to poor planning and lack of follow-up care.
“Monsoon is nature’s open invitation to begin tree planting,” Taralekar said. “But without proper knowledge, intention, and maintenance, these efforts often go to waste.”
She stressed the importance of planting native and deep-rooted species that thrive in local conditions, support biodiversity, and aid in pollution control, rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge. Recommended trees include Peepal, Banyan, Jamun, Karanja, Neem, Tamarind, Amla, Kadamb, Bahava, and Moringa—each offering ecological, medicinal, or pollinator benefits.
Choosing the right site, according to Taralekar, is crucial. Highways (with a 4-foot buffer), public parks, community gardens, water bodies, and housing societies are ideal for plantations. For urban areas, she advises maintaining at least an 11-foot distance from concrete structures when planting large trees.
She added that certain trees like Peepal and Banyan release oxygen for up to 20 hours a day, which can help cool urban heat zones by 2.5°C to 3°C.
With growing concerns about climate change and urban heat islands, Taralekar urges citizens to go beyond ceremonial planting and focus on nurturing native trees. “This monsoon, let us not just plant, but protect trees for future generations,” she said.
To improve survival rates, she outlined four key factors to consider before planting:
Key factors to keep in mind before tree plantation:
- Assess soil type and drainage to ensure strong root growth.
- Water regularly in the initial months and provide sturdy support.
- Choose saplings at least 3 years old, suited to space and expected size.
- Plant companion species to boost biodiversity and soil health.
