A Japanese sleep competition took an unusual approach to crowning its winner, judging participants on how quickly they fell asleep and how soundly they slept. Held in Tokyo on October 5, the contest, called “Matt Race”, featured dozens of participants resting on mattresses for up to 90 minutes while wearing sleep-tracking devices. The monitors helped assess their sleep, with the winner selected based on the speed and quality of their rest rather than simply the length of their nap. Organised by a mattress company, the event offered a prize of more than two million yen, approximately $14,000. The competition aimed to raise awareness about sleep deprivation in Japan, where long working hours and commutes contribute to insufficient rest. The winner, known only as Suimii, said she hoped to use the money towards moving into her own home and buying a bed fit for a princess.
