New Delhi: Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with other opposition MPs, entered the Akashvani Bhawan premises on Tuesday, October 6, after being stopped during an INDIA bloc march to the Election Commission headquarters demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.
The MPs had begun their march from Parliament’s Makar Dwar towards Nirvachan Sadan but were stopped by security personnel near the NITI Aayog office. After being prevented from proceeding, the protesters sat on the road. Rahul Gandhi and Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee climbed onto a police barricade, while Priyanka Gandhi briefly boarded a bus after being detained before returning to join the protest.
Rahul and Priyanka, along with Congress MP Deepender Hooda, later entered Akashvani Bhawan through its reception gate despite police restrictions and were seen sitting under a tree. A large police contingent, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Sharma, reached the spot.
Opposition MPs carried cutouts depicting Kumar in an RSS uniform and raised slogans including “Vote chor, gaddi chhod”. Rahul later posted on X, “Gyanesh, it's done bro. Time to resign.”
The protest followed the Supreme Court’s observations on Monday, October 5, that it had not approved any modified version of Form 6, used for voter enrolment, and would examine Election Commission records to determine whether changes were made and who authorised them.
Opposition parties have accused the poll panel of misleading the public over the court’s position and raised concerns over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The Election Commission has rejected allegations of internal differences and maintained that SIR-related decisions were unanimous.
