Airoli: A five-foot-long venomous cobra was safely rescued from a busy highway near Airoli Toll Naka following a timely alert from a citizen.

The joint wildlife rescue team of the International Organisation for Animal Protection (OIPA), Amma Care Foundation (ACF) and Plant & Animals Welfare Society–Mumbai (PAWS-Mumbai) responded to a call from Sunny Sangati. Rescue volunteer Abhijit Chavan promptly reached the spot and safely secured the snake.

After the rescue, Dr Rahul Meshram examined the cobra and confirmed it was fit for release. It was subsequently relocated to a suitable natural habitat under the Forest Department’s guidance and in accordance with prescribed protocols.

Nisha Kunju, who coordinated the operation, credited the citizen’s timely information and the volunteer’s swift response for ensuring the snake’s safe rescue and release.

She urged residents not to approach, catch or handle snakes if they encounter one. Instead, they should maintain a safe distance and contact the Forest Department or a trained wildlife rescue team.

Snake sightings and other wildlife emergencies can be reported through the Forest Department’s Hello Forest helpline on 1926 or the ACF–PAWS-Mumbai helpline on 9833480388.

Wildlife rescuers stressed that attempting to handle venomous snakes can endanger both people and animals. Prompt reporting helps trained teams respond safely and protect wildlife in urban areas.
