Citizen group seeks action on noisy vehicles

Navi Mumbai: Citizen group Sajag Nagrik Manch has urged the traffic police to take stricter action against vehicle-related noise pollution, particularly motorists using modified or removed silencers and loud sirens during late-night hours.

The group submitted a representation to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dr Rahul Khade, seeking regular checks on vehicles that allegedly produce excessive exhaust noise. It said, “Vehicular noise, especially at night, affects residents’ health, quality of life, and their right to peaceful sleep.”

The representation also sought a review of the ambulance siren used during late-night hours in areas where traffic is light, while clarifying that the group does not question the medical necessity of individual ambulance journeys.

The Bhau Sakharam Marg area in Belapur was cited as an example, with a resident reportedly complaining of frequent ambulance sirens around midnight and continuing until 5 am.

“We are not against ambulance services, but we seek assistance regarding the noise pollution caused during midnight hours,” said Sudhir Dani.

“Noise pollution has become a serious concern, and for many Navi Mumbai residents, a peaceful night’s sleep is increasingly difficult. The police should strictly take action against motorists who remove silencers or deliberately create excessive noise merely to draw attention to their vehicles. Such violations must be dealt with under the law,” said Dilip Vaidya, a member of Sajag Nagrik Manch.

The group has urged authorities to conduct regular inspections and initiate action under applicable provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and Central Motor Vehicle Rules wherever violations are established. A copy of the representation was also submitted to Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Milind Bharambe.
