Mumbai: The BMW that plunged off Mumbai’s Coastal Road bridge in a fatal accident on Sunday, September 20, had reportedly been involved in an earlier speeding incident, with an FIR registered at Gamdevi police station in March this year. A video of the earlier accident has now surfaced on social media.

According to police records, complainant Omkar Shirke and his wife were travelling when the BMW allegedly hit them on March 29. Shirke had recorded the incident, and the footage showing the damaged vehicle and the driver is now being widely circulated.

The development comes after the luxury car crashed through a barrier on the Coastal Road near Lotus Jetty in Worli around 5:20 a.m. on September 20, killing three students and injuring another. Police said the car was travelling at high speed towards Haji Ali from Marine Drive when the driver appeared to have lost control.

The deceased were identified as Dhairya Sheth (17), Aditya Jakasania (19) and Shanay Gajjar (21), who was driving the vehicle. Aditya Oswal (23) sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment at BYL Nair Hospital. All four students were from Gujarat and were studying in Mumbai.

CCTV footage showed the BMW speeding before falling nearly 75 metres into an under-construction site. Police collected blood samples of the victims for forensic examination and are investigating possible offences related to rash and negligent driving.

The accident has renewed concerns over road safety, with several fatal crashes reported on the Coastal Road since its opening in March 2024.
