World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has ended his 2026 season to undergo treatment for a persistent right knee injury that has troubled him since July. The Italian announced the decision on Tuesday via social media, confirming he will not return to competition this year and will focus on rehabilitation ahead of 2027.
“Me, together with the doctors, have decided that I need a course of treatment for my knee, which means that the 2026 season is officially over,” Sinner said in a video message on Instagram. He added that, despite the disappointment of missing the US Open and the remainder of the tour, his priority now is his long-term career.
Sinner has not played since retaining his Wimbledon title in mid-July, when he defeated Alexander Zverev 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a four-set final at the All-England Club. That victory marked his fifth Grand Slam singles crown and second consecutive triumph on the grass of SW19.
Before the injury, the 25-year-old had produced one of the most commanding campaigns of his career. He won five consecutive ATP Masters 1000 titles—Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome—to complete the Career Golden Masters, and extended his match-winning streak to 30 before a surprise second-round defeat at Roland Garros.
Sinner’s withdrawal brings an abrupt close to a season in which he looked set to contest the year-end ATP Finals in Turin, where he is a two-time reigning champion. His team indicated the treatment is for knee inflammation and is intended to ensure he returns to full fitness for the start of the 2027 campaign.
