Thane: Shiv Sena (UBT) divisional chief Pradeep Purnekar was shot dead in the Manpada area of Thane on September 29 night, triggering a police investigation and political reactions. Purnekar was reportedly attacked near his office in the Kapurbawdi police station limits at around 9.30 pm. He sustained serious bullet injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died during treatment.

Police initially searched for unidentified attackers and examined CCTV footage from the area. The investigation has since led to arrests. On September 30, police detained one suspect and arrested another in connection with the case, while teams continued searching for other alleged accomplices.

Police said one arrested suspect told investigators that the alleged killing was linked to “political and social issues.” Police are also examining the involvement of other persons and the circumstances surrounding the attack.

As per media reports, police arrested Purnekar’s acquaintance Papya Shinde after the investigation indicated his alleged involvement in the conspiracy, while the search for other accused continued. These are police-investigation findings and remain subject to further investigation.

Purnekar was active in local Shiv Sena (UBT) politics and served as a divisional-level party functionary in the Thane-Ghodbunder area. His killing has drawn reactions from party leaders, who demanded that all those responsible be identified and arrested.

Purnekar was attacked within the Kapurbawdi police station limits around 9 pm and was rushed to Infinity Hospital on Ghodbunder Road, where he succumbed to his injuries. Police are examining CCTV footage and investigating possible angles, including political rivalry and personal enmity.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders have demanded swift arrests and a probe into the killing.
