From the outset, Mumbai City asserted their dominance, controlling possession and dictating the game's tempo. Their early efforts paid off in the 7th minute when Jon Toral won a free kick on the right wing. Captain Lallianzuala Chhangte delivered a precise cross to the far post, where Tiri's header was deftly turned in by forward Jorge Pereyra Díaz, marking a triumphant return to the club with a goal.
Backed by squad depth and an experienced core group, the Islanders quickly doubled their lead just two minutes later. A flowing move initiated deep in their own half sliced through Delhi’s midfield, with midfielder Toral again instrumental. He threaded a clever pass to Vikram Partap Singh, who finished stylishly with a stunning curling strike at the top corner to make it 2-0.
The SC Delhi's Red Brigade gradually found their footing, enjoying more possession but struggling to penetrate Mumbai's resolute defence. In the 26th minute, Jorge Ortiz came close to extending the lead for the Blues, striking the post from the edge of the box. Delhi's attempts to respond were thwarted when a free kick narrowly missed the target.
Mumbai restored their momentum in the 32nd minute. Vikram Partap Singh beat his marker with a clever run down the left, delivering a low cross that the Delhi goalkeeper failed to handle cleanly, allowing Jorge Ortiz to capitalise and extend the lead to 3-0 before halftime.
The second half saw SC Delhi emerge with renewed vigour, pressing high and creating several chances. In the 56th minute, Isaac Vanmalsawma and Augustine Lalrochana combined effectively, but Akash Mishra's timely clearance thwarted their efforts. Despite their pressure, it wasn’t until the 73rd minute that Delhi came close to scoring, missing a corner by mere inches.
Mumbai City continued to threaten on the counter, with Chhangte striking the post. However, SC Delhi eventually found the net when Dhruv Alva conceded a penalty, converted by Andrei Alba, despite goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa diving the right way.
As the match drew to a close, Mumbai's defence held firm against late pressure.
In the sixth minute of added injury time, striker Vikram Partap Singh capped off a stellar performance, racing forward to receive a lobbed pass from Brandon Fernandes, striking it home to seal the 4-1 victory. With a maximum of three points in their kitty, they will look to maintain their momentum in their next Group D fixture against I League outfit Rajasthan United FC on Monday, November 3, at the same venue.
