Belapur: Belapur MLA Manda Mhatre has proposed a comprehensive ‘Crematorium Vision’ plan to modernise and upgrade funeral facilities across Navi Mumbai, citing the need for dignified and hassle-free services amid the city’s rapid population growth.

Mhatre has urged Maharashtra Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Jaykumar Gore to convene an urgent meeting with senior officials to expedite the proposed project. She has also sought coordination between the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), CIDCO and other agencies for implementing the upgrades.

Highlighting the transformation of the Diwale Gaon crematorium into a model facility, Mhatre said it now includes modern amenities such as a compound wall, concrete roads, paved pathways, an upgraded cremation shed, seating arrangements, drinking water facilities, landscaping, tree plantation and proper lighting. Similar work is currently underway at the Belapur crematorium.

“Considering Navi Mumbai’s expanding population due to CIDCO townships, slum rehabilitation projects and private developments, existing crematoriums are facing increased pressure. It is essential to provide modern and respectful facilities for citizens,” Mhatre said.

Under the proposed plan, she has called for pollution-free electric and gas cremation systems, waiting halls, clean toilets, drainage facilities, CCTV surveillance, security arrangements, beautification, signage, plantation and improved accessibility for senior citizens, women and persons with disabilities.

“The aim is to ensure that every citizen receives dignified funeral services without inconvenience. A proper master plan for maintenance and management of crematoriums is also required,” she said.

Mhatre has requested authorities to take immediate decisions and replicate the Diwale model across crematoriums, especially those located in village settlements across Navi Mumbai.
