Mumbai: The Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay has postponed its mid-semester examinations following the death of a second-year student at its Powai campus. The exams, earlier scheduled for September 26 and 27, will now be conducted on October 10 and 11, the institute announced on Thursday, September 24.

In a statement, IIT-Bombay said the rescheduled examinations would follow the same timetable as the original schedule. The decision comes days after the student was found dead in his hostel room on September 18, triggering protests on campus and demands for a detailed investigation.

The Mumbai Police Crime Branch is probing the case, with officials stating that all possible angles are being examined. The police have also appealed to people to avoid spreading unverified information during the investigation.

The student’s family has levelled allegations against the institute administration and certain officials, following which a case was registered against IIT-Bombay professor Suryanarayana Doolla on charges including alleged abetment to suicide and caste-based discrimination. The professor has been sent on leave amid the ongoing inquiry.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi spoke with the student’s family and assured them of support in their pursuit of justice, according to the Maharashtra Congress.

The institute said academic activities have resumed on campus while the investigation continues. Authorities have urged students and stakeholders to maintain calm as the probe progresses. The incident has raised concerns over student welfare and support systems in educational institutions.
