Wins Rs. 6 Crore Prize
Thane: Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has achieved third place in the prestigious Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan, a state-level environmental initiative led by the Maharashtra government. As a reward, TMC has been awarded a cash prize of Rs. 6 crore for its outstanding contribution to eco-friendly practices.
The success is attributed to the extensive environmental activities conducted under the Chief Minister’s Harit Abhiyan in the Thane Municipal area. Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao commended the active participation of the Thane citizens, stating, "This victory is theirs." Rao further noted that the prize money would be utilized for additional environmental projects to enhance the city’s sustainability efforts.
Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan is a program based on the five elements of nature—earth, air, water, fire, and sky, and is implemented by local bodies under the guidance of the Maharashtra Department of Environment and Climate Change.
The fourth edition of the campaign, Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan 4.00, ran from April 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024, with participation from 22,632 local self-government bodies, including 494 municipal corporations and 22,218 Gram Panchayats. In the final results, Thane ranked third in the category of cities with a population of over 1 million.
