Shantanu Maheshwari, a dynamic figure in India's entertainment scene, effortlessly combines his talents as a dancer and actor. Known for his graceful precision and emotional depth, he is one of the most beloved faces in Indian television today. In this exclusive interview, Shantanu opens up about his journey, the challenges he faced, and the passion that drives him.

How did your dance journey begin?
Honestly, it started quietly. I wasn’t one of those kids who dreamed of becoming a dancer. I just loved moving to music, whether at family gatherings or school functions. When I moved to Mumbai for college, I discovered street dance culture, and that's when dance transformed from fun to a form of identity.

Many people first saw you on Dil Dosti Dance. How did that shape your career?
Dil Dosti Dance was a turning point. Dance was the soul of the show, not just a backdrop. It allowed me to explore various dance forms, understand choreography, and connect with a vast audience. It taught me discipline, rehearsing, shooting, and performing non-stop.

What were some of the challenges you faced in the early days?
The biggest challenge was balancing studies and dance commitments. College life, rehearsals, and performances were tough to juggle. Mentally, I struggled with self-doubt. I often questioned if I was good enough or if dance could be a real career.

Which experience has been transformative for you?
The Desi Hoppers’ victory at the World of Dance Championship in Los Angeles was surreal. Competing with the world’s best dancers was challenging but also incredibly rewarding. It showed me the power of teamwork and that Indian dancers can compete on a global stage.

Your style is often called effortless. What’s your training like?
(Laughs) I wish it were effortless! My style is rooted in street dance forms like popping, locking, and whacking. But I train in everything, stretching, conditioning, and exploring new movements. Even when I’m busy, I always make time to dance. It’s like meditation for me.

What has dance taught you about life?
Dance has taught me patience, humility, and resilience. It teaches you to listen, not just to music, but to people and even silence. It also teaches you to take criticism constructively and rise after every fall, both literally and emotionally.

How do you balance dancing and acting?
Dance and acting are deeply connected. Dance gives you control over your body and expressions, while acting adds emotional depth. Combining both creates richer performances. Acting challenges me to explore characters, and dance pushes me to explore myself.

What advice would you give to aspiring dancers?
Be patient. Success doesn’t happen overnight. Train hard, stay humble, and stay curious. Don’t limit yourself to one style; explore them all. Dance for yourself, not for validation. When you treat dance like a friend, you’ll grow.

What keeps you inspired?
The pure joy of movement and the incredible performers around the world keep me inspired. And of course, my fans, if my journey inspires even one dancer, I’ll feel fulfilled.

Where do you see your dance journey going from here?
I want to keep learning, creating, and working on projects that blend Indian dance with international standards. My goal is to create spaces where young dancers can thrive without fear. Dance gave me my identity, and I want to give back to the community that shaped me.
