Munich (Germany): Bayern Munich have been dealt a double setback ahead of a demanding run of fixtures, with head coach Vincent Kompany hospitalised after collapsing at the club’s training ground and winger Luis Díaz expected to be sidelined for up to six weeks.
Kompany, 40, required medical attention after collapsing while watching Bayern’s reserve team train at Säbener Strasse on Friday, October 23. The club said he was undergoing thorough examinations and would remain under medical care, while his coaching staff would oversee training and match duties until further notice.
Reports in Germany said Kompany was in a stable condition. He had been managing a viral infection during the week, and Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said the coach’s health was the club’s “highest priority”, adding that he would receive all the time needed to recover.
Díaz’s absence compounds Bayern’s concerns. An MRI scan showed his injury was more serious than first thought, and the Colombian winger is expected to miss at least a month, with his recovery period estimated at four to six weeks.
He is set to miss matches against Borussia Dortmund and Atlético Madrid, as well as fixtures against Köln, Lille and Hamburger SV after the international break, and is a major doubt for Colombia’s international matches.
Bayern have sufficient attacking depth, with Harry Kane and Michael Olise expected to shoulder greater responsibility, while Serge Gnabry, Ismael Saibari and Lennart Karl may receive extended opportunities.
