Muddy water raises concern in Ghansoli, Airoli and Rabale

Navi Mumbai: Residents of Ghansoli, Airoli and Rabale have reported receiving muddy, discoloured water for two consecutive days, raising concerns over water quality and public health. In Ghansoli, households have reported suspended particles and an oily film in the supply, forcing some families to buy bottled drinking water.

Complaints have emerged from sectors 1 to 21 in Ghansoli. Abhijit Patil, a resident of Sector 3, said the area receives water twice daily, around 9 am and 9 pm, but Friday evening’s supply was visibly contaminated.

“The water was severely contaminated, with an oily layer visible on its surface,” Patil said. He collected a sample and recorded a video of the water. He also alleged that staff were unavailable when he approached the local ward office and water department to register his complaint.

Residents said suspended particles were clogging household filters and reverse osmosis (RO) systems, adding to maintenance costs and inconvenience.

In Airoli Koliwada, residents have also complained of irregular water supply over the past few months. Rohit R. said families were increasingly dependent on tankers or had to travel to distant locations to fetch water.

“Whenever we receive water through the municipal supply, it is not fit for drinking or even bathing,” he said.

In Rabale, resident Jyoti Sawle also reported contaminated municipal water.

Raju Tadvi, a staff member of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s (NMMC) water works department for Ghansoli, attributed the recent contamination to a pipeline problem. He said the fault had been rectified and assured residents that clean water would be supplied during the evening distribution on October 24.

Following the complaints, NMMC Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde directed attention to the issue and initiated water-quality checks. Samples were collected from Vashi, Kalamboli, CBD Belapur, Mahape and Airoli for testing. According to the civic administration, the tests found the water quality to be satisfactory for public use.

Residents have urged the NMMC to conduct regular water-quality tests and strengthen pipeline monitoring to prevent a recurrence. With households spending extra on drinking water and filter maintenance, they have called on the civic body to ensure safe, clean water reaches every home and that complaints are addressed promptly.
