Residents of Kharghar Sector 7 transform Highway side into lush mini jungle

The relentless efforts of Kharghar Sector 7 residents have turned a once-waste dumping ground along the Sion Panvel Highway into a thriving green space. What was once a barren stretch adjacent to the highway has been transformed into a verdant oasis, thanks to the dedication of the community.

Initially an eyesore dotted with debris, the area now boasts a lush 'mini jungle', teeming with life and rich in oxygen. Since 2012, residents have been actively involved in planting and nurturing trees, determined to reclaim the space for nature.

Each family took it upon themselves to contribute, planting a minimum of two saplings according to their preference. A diverse range of trees, both native and non-native, now adorn the landscape, including mango, jamun, pipal, banyan, palm, and bamboo. Despite the challenges posed by the lack of support from authorities, residents persevered, relying on their own resources and rainwater to sustain the greenery.

Chhaya Taralekar, a prominent figure in the city's plantation efforts, lent her support by planting native trees and providing valuable guidance to the residents. She highlighted the manifold benefits of the green space, emphasizing its role in reducing noise pollution, lowering temperatures, absorbing carbon emissions, and fostering biodiversity.

Despite occasional setbacks such as plastic dumping by unruly individuals, the trees stand tall as a testament to the community's resilience. They not only provide a welcome respite for residents but also serve as a vital link to the highway bus stop.

Taralekar urged other communities to replicate this model of collective action, underscoring the transformative power of tree plantation in mitigating environmental challenges. She enumerated the numerous advantages of roadside tree planting, including sound barrier effects, temperature reduction, pollution absorption, and soil conservation through companion plantation.
