NAVI MUMBAI - Tensions escalated at Morbe Dam as aggrieved land acquisition victims, dissatisfied with decades of unmet promises, attempted to disrupt water supply to Navi Mumbai. The Chowk Morbe Dam, pivotal for Navi Mumbai's water needs, has been a focal point of contention since its construction on the Dhavari River in Khalapur, Chowk.
Despite assurances from authorities during land acquisition, victims have not received proper compensation or rehabilitation even thirty years later. Frustrated by government inaction despite repeated demands, the victims commenced a hunger strike on June 27 to press for their rights.
The situation intensified when protesters, feeling unheard, resorted to drastic measures. They attempted to cut off the water supply by breaching the entrance gate of the dam. Police intervened as tensions rose, confronting protesters who had breached security barriers at the main entrance. Incidents of vandalism ensued, with office furniture damaged and stones thrown amidst the turmoil.
Authorities scrambled to defuse the situation, emphasizing dialogue and understanding amidst the grievances voiced by the dam project victims.
