Navi Mumbai races to save every drop amid drought

Navi Mumbai: Amid drought concerns and the state government’s directive to reduce water supply by 10%, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is prioritising water conservation measures before implementing an immediate cut in regular supply.

The civic body is focusing on curbing water wastage, stopping water supply to construction sites and promoting the use of alternative water sources to preserve existing stocks for the coming months.

Speaking to Newsband, Ravikant Patil, chairman of the NMMC’s Water Supply and Sewage Committee, outlined the administration’s efforts to ensure judicious use of available water.

“We are taking several measures like cleaning the wells, installing water pumps, and installing water tanks in the slums or wherever possible so that groundwater can be used for purposes other than drinking. Efforts are taken to ensure that available stock is rightly used for only drinking or cooking purposes,” Patil said.

The civic body is also encouraging housing societies to use treated sewage water for non-potable purposes, including car washing, toilet flushing and premises cleaning.

“We can provide STP water to the housing societies through tankers on their request for car-washing and society cleaning purposes so that regular water supply can be dedicatedly used for drinking purposes,” he added.

According to the water stock figures provided for October 28, 2026, Morbe Dam, owned by NMMC, is holding 133.295 million cubic metres (MCM) of water, representing 84% of its live storage capacity compared with last year’s 97.09%. “Of the available water stock, only 64% is usable for drinking purposes. Even then, it can last until mid-next year only if water is used judiciously. Given the potential impact of El Niño, we may have to introduce water cuts in the near future,” he said.

NMMC’s strategy centres on reducing wastage, expanding the use of treated wastewater and encouraging citizens to conserve water to help sustain supplies through the coming months.

NMMC’s key measures

  • Curb water wastage
  • Stop water supply to construction sites
  • Clean wells and install pumps
  • Encourage the use of treated sewage water
  • Promote responsible water consumption

Target: Sustain available water stocks until the end of May 2027.
