Citizens join hands to combat air pollution

Amid deteriorating air quality, citizens, environmentalists, and social activists have launched the Navi Mumbai Clean Air Collective to push for cleaner air and stronger pollution-control measures.

Conceptualised by Vashi-based environmental organisation Owe Earth, the citizen-led initiative was formed on October 25 through a WhatsApp group. It aims to bring together residents, students, housing societies and environmental advocates to build a united movement for environmental protection.

The collective’s first online meeting is scheduled for November 1, with sessions at 11 am, 3 pm and 5 pm. Its initial focus will be on citizen empowerment, knowledge-sharing, volunteer participation, and campaign development.

Kapithra Kannapiran, founder of Owe Earth, stressed that the initiative belongs to everyone. “It is not my initiative; it will be our initiative. Tackling air pollution requires collective action. I urge every citizen to join this movement, which is free of cost and rooted in a deep human–nature consciousness,” she said.

The collective plans to run awareness campaigns on air quality and airborne pollutants, encourage verified information sharing, and promote community-level environmental activities.

It also intends to seek accountability from agencies responsible for pollution control and urban governance, including the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation, traffic police, builders and elected representatives.

“This is not just an information-sharing or message-forwarding WhatsApp group. It is a climate action group in which every citizen is expected to participate in one activity or another,” Kannapiran said.

The collective invites citizens to join the movement and contribute towards cleaner air, improved public health and greater environmental accountability.
