Belapur: The importance of mental health and emotional well-being in resolving family disputes was highlighted at a World Mental Health Day programme organised at the Family Court on October 13.
The event focused on managing anger, anxiety, depression and stress faced by spouses and children during divorce proceedings, maintenance claims and child custody battles. Speakers stressed that emotional stability and professional counselling can help individuals make informed decisions and handle conflicts constructively.
The programme was jointly organised by the Family Court, Belapur, the Taluka Legal Services Committee, the Navi Mumbai Court Bar Association and the Sukoon Project of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). Family Court Principal Judge Subhash Kafare presided over the event.
Dr Amruta Joshi, Director of the Sukoon Project at TISS, discussed mental health, factors affecting emotional well-being and the consequences of prolonged stress. Sonal Badbe, a colleague from the project, delivered an audio-visual presentation explaining mental health through practical examples. She also described physiological changes associated with intense anger and depression and outlined techniques to manage emotional responses.
Speakers noted that people approaching family courts often face significant emotional challenges alongside legal complications. Fear, uncertainty, and psychological distress can affect both adults and children, making emotional support and counselling essential during difficult periods.
The programme also emphasised public awareness and encouraged people experiencing prolonged stress to seek appropriate professional help.
Dr Joshi and Badbe were felicitated with certificates by the Family Court and the Navi Mumbai Court Bar Association in recognition of their presentations.
Advocate Manisha Bandgar conducted the programme, while Advocate Hemangi Patil delivered the vote of thanks. Court staff, lawyers, legal services committee members and litigants attended the event in large numbers
