Ulhasnagar: Amid growing concerns over water scarcity in Ulhasnagar, the civic corporation (UMC) has set in motion an ambitious plan to revive numerous non-functional borewells in the city.
The corporation plans to revive 244 borewells across Camp 1, 2, and 3 areas. "The tender is for Rs 46 lakh and will cover the repair of all 244 borewells in Ulhasnagar Camp 1, 2, and 3," confirmed Ashok Ghule, executive engineer, water department, UMC.
Currently, over half of these 244 borewells are not operational, significantly impacting water availability in multiple localities. Despite various water supply projects being implemented over the years, several areas in the city have been facing persistent water shortages.
The situation had escalated in recent weeks, leading to citizen protests and political parties staging aggressive demonstrations to demand accountability and action from the municipal administration.
In response, the UMC released a revised water supply schedule outlining water distribution timings for different parts of the city. The schedule includes alternate-day supply in some areas and supply based on availability in others. The administration also provided clarity on water lifting points and their timings.
The upcoming borewell repair initiative is expected to further alleviate the water crisis and ensure more consistent water supply to the affected areas.
