Mumbai: The state government has signed agreements with the University of York (UK) and the University of Western Australia to set up campuses in Navi Mumbai’s upcoming Education City.
This was announced by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES), the development is part of the state’s push to make Maharashtra a global education hub.
Fadnavis highlighted that the project would provide Indian students with access to world-class education without the financial burden of studying abroad.
The campuses will offer the same quality of education as their parent institutions and will cater to both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in fields such as computer science, business, and creative industries.
The University of York’s campus is expected to admit students by 2026, with other universities in talks to join the initiative.
Discussions are underway with eight more institutions, with three awaiting approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The total investment from the universities is expected to reach Rs 1,500 crore. This move follows reforms in India’s National Education Policy, allowing foreign universities to establish campuses in the country, marking a significant step toward transforming Maharashtra into a global educational destination.
