In a significant development aimed at enhancing administrative coverage and municipal services, the government has officially announced the inclusion of fourteen villages from the Khoni group of Kalyan taluka into the limits of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC). The decision, long-awaited by local residents and representatives, marks a crucial milestone in the ongoing efforts to streamline governance and address the needs of these villages and its residents.

The notification, issued on March 7, 2024, signifies the culmination of extensive discussions and advocacy spanning several months. These fourteen villages, previously situated near Shil Phata, will now be integrated into the administrative framework of Navi Mumbai, paving the way for their representation in the municipal hall following future elections.

The journey towards this expansion was not without challenges. In the aftermath of the villages' inclusion in the NMMC during the second general election, tensions flared as local villagers expressed vehement opposition, culminating in tragic events. However, the resilience and determination of the villagers persisted, manifesting in sustained protests and advocacy efforts since 2015.

The villages affected by this decision, including Dahisar, Mokashi, Valivali, Pimpri, Nighu, Navali, Vaklan, Bamarli, Narivali, Bale, Nagaon, Bhandarli, Uttar Shiv, and Goteghar, represent scenic locales with predominantly Agri Koli Bhumiputra and Koyna project rehabilitated populations. Despite their inclusion in the NMMC, no adjustments have been made to their representation in Vidhan Sabha and Lok Sabha areas.

With immediate effect, administrative responsibilities and property matters previously overseen by the Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti will now be transferred to the municipal administration.

Sakshana Patil, Chairman of the 14 Village Development Committee, expressed gratitude for the successful culmination of an eight-year struggle, highlighting the perseverance and dedication of the villagers in advocating for their rights and inclusion within the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation.
