Vashi: Following a shocking slab collapse at a municipal school in Sector 15, Vashi, Mayor Sujata Patil has directed an immediate structural audit of all schools under the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC). The decision came after a narrow escape for students and staff at School No. 28 on March 20.
The incident occurred when a classroom slab suddenly gave way. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as the area was relatively empty at the time. However, the incident has triggered serious concerns over the condition of civic-run school infrastructure.
The matter was strongly raised during the NMMC General Body Meeting. BJP corporator Suraj Patil questioned the administration’s negligence, warning of potential risks. “Today, we were lucky that no child was hurt. But who will take responsibility if a major tragedy occurs tomorrow?” he asked.
Several corporators echoed similar concerns, criticizing poor construction quality and lack of maintenance. In addition to infrastructure issues, they also highlighted a shortage of teachers and called for broader reforms to strengthen the education system.
Addressing the situation, Mayor Sujata Patil termed the incident “unfortunate” and stressed that student safety cannot be compromised. She issued clear instructions to the administration: “A comprehensive structural audit of every NMMC school building must be completed during the upcoming summer vacation.”
She further directed that any building found unsafe must be repaired immediately, adding, “All safety-related construction work must be concluded before the onset of the monsoon to ensure a secure environment for students.”
The civic body is now expected to appoint specialized agencies to carry out inspections across all municipal schools. The move aims to prevent future incidents and ensure a safe learning environment for thousands of students across the city.
