Road cave-in: Residents up in arms as MBMC drags its feet against builder

Mira Road: Even after a month since a section of cement road near Indralok and Tapovan School caved-in reportedly due to excavation work out by RNA Builders, legal action has been initiated against those responsible. With schools reopening, parents and residents express renewed outrage over continued delays by the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) and the police.

On May 17, heavy excavation by RNA Builders undermined the road and adjacent stormwater drain. The following day, the cement pavement caved in, severely damaging both road and drain, and disrupting commuters and locals alike.

MBMC authorities have been slow to act. "It’s been a month, and still no charges have been filed. The builder and the MBMC are acting with impunity,” Deepak Bagri, president of the Mira Bhayandar Congress Committee, alleged. He noted that MBMC’s only response has been a notice to RNA Builders and an order for a damage assessment, with no response forthcoming from the builder.

MMRDA’s executive engineer AS Titre confirmed that RNA used broken concrete in place of proper rubble soil and failed to compact the ground adequately—violations that led to the collapse.

Commissioner Radhabinod Sharma maintained MBMC was hot on the trail. “We will soon complete our structural assessments and are considering all legal remedies against the builder.” He added that measures to secure the site and restore the road are being expedited.

With schools now in session, the urgency of restoring safe passage and implementing accountability has never been greater. Residents insist that without prompt action and transparency, public trust in civic governance will only erode further.
