Accuse officials of superficial inspection
Despite efforts to address air pollution concerns in Sector 26, Kopri area of Vashi, residents continue to grapple with unsuitable living conditions, exacerbated by a foul smell that has permeated the air. Allegations have surfaced, asserting that the pollution control officials are merely conducting superficial inspections without effectively addressing the persistent issue.
Following the intervention of the high court regarding dust and air pollution, the municipal corporation had mandated the development of a remedial plan, resulting in a partial reduction in dust pollution.
However, residents claim that the chemical air pollution remains unabated. Over the past three days, a significant increase in air pollution, emanating from chemical factories during the night, has led to severe discomfort for residents. The strong odour has caused symptoms such as suffocation, nausea, and watery eyes, impacting residents within a ten-meter radius.
Residents assert that despite filing complaints about the air pollution, the authorities' inspections seem to downplay the severity of the issue. There are allegations that officials might be attempting to mislead residents by generating reports that deny the existence of any foul smell during their inspections.
Expressing their concerns, residents are drawing parallels to the Bhopal gas tragedy and urge the administration to take concrete measures promptly before lives are endangered. Professor Willeen Kumar, a resident, has called for decisive action against the persistent air pollution, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive and effective resolution to the ongoing environmental challenges.
As the situation in Sector 26 remains critical, residents hope that the authorities will take immediate and substantial steps to address the air pollution crisis and safeguard the well-being of the community.
