Protest planned against continued mangrove destruction at TS Chanakya Wetland

Citizens and environmental activists are gearing up for yet another protest against the ongoing destruction of mangroves at the TS Chanakya wetland. The protest, scheduled for March 16th at 7 a.m., follows the recent incident of fresh mangrove cutting observed on March 12th. Despite previous protests and police involvement, the destruction persists, prompting renewed action from concerned citizens.

The citizen group "Save Navi Mumbai Environment," in collaboration with other environmental organizations, is spearheading the upcoming protest. Sunil Agarwal, founder of Save Navi Mumbai Environment, has filed complaints with the Mangrove Grievances Redressal Committee via the Konkan Mangroves website and app, urging swift action against those responsible for the destruction. Acknowledgement of the complaints has been received, but activists emphasize the need for concrete measures to protect the remaining mangroves.

According to Agarwal, there are suspicions that the project proponent, Mitry Construction, is exploiting the situation to encroach upon the land for further development. Activists demand legal action, including FIRs against the builder and its site supervisor.
