Mira-Bhayandar: The Bombay High Court on May 5, reaffirmed its interim order banning the use of Plaster of Paris (POP) idols across Maharashtra, stating that the prohibition will remain in force until further notice.

The court’s decision came during the hearing of public interest litigation concerning the use of POP idols for immersion during festivals.

During the hearing, the state government informed the court that it had submitted a report to the Central Pollution Control Board on May 5, 2025, based on recommendations made by the Kakodkar Committee on April 29. The CPCB has sought time to evaluate the proposals and has been directed by the court to submit its response in the form of an affidavit by June 1. The matter has been posted for June 9.

While the State has suggested conditional exemptions for sea immersions, the Court clarified that the existing ban—issued on January 30, 2025—remains fully enforceable. All authorities concerned have been instructed to ensure strict compliance.

Environmental activist and petitioner Harshad Dhage criticized the government’s indecisiveness, calling it detrimental to both artisans and the ecosystem. “The constant ambiguity has created a crisis for livelihoods and for nature,” Dhage said.

“This is not just about POP—it’s about protecting our traditions and our environment,” he added.
