Navi Mumbai : With the aim of promoting sustainable urban development, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) hosted a one-day workshop titled Green City – Green Building at its headquarters in CBD Belapur. The event focused on advancing the green building concept and encouraging eco-friendly infrastructure across the city.

Organised in collaboration with the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), the workshop featured detailed sessions where participants explored practical strategies for adopting green construction and minimising environmental impact. The IGBC team also elaborated on its rating system, which promotes sustainable practices in land use, urban transport, infrastructure, and citizen welfare.

Experts from IGBC, including Gargi Das, Asfia Taimur, Raja Reddy, and Vikram Singha, led sessions on various aspects of green buildings.

Speaking on the occasion, Sharad Pawar, deputy commissioner, emphasised the need to integrate environmental considerations into all development projects, calling it a social responsibility.

Somnath Kekan, joint director of urban planning, proposed that all future NMMC school buildings should be constructed following green building norms to instil eco-consciousness among students.

Shirish Aardwad, additional city engineer, highlighted Navi Mumbai’s leadership in the green movement, recalling that the NMMC headquarters was once India’s largest green-rated building. He urged developers to prioritise eco-friendly practices in all new projects.

Architect Hiten Sethi noted that India, through IGBC, has emerged as a global leader in sustainable urban development and said Navi Mumbai has the potential to set new benchmarks in this field.
