Kharghar: Navi Mumbai's Kharghar Sector 10 is facing a growing environmental concern as a local pond, once a tranquil spot in the area, is now marred by heaps of waste and garbage.
The pond, located in Sector 10, Kharghar, has become a dumping ground for various types of debris, posing serious health risks to the residents living nearby.
Aswin, an X user, shared a few pictures of the area. Recent images from the site paint a grim picture. The pond’s banks are littered with discarded plastic bags, bottles, construction debris, and other waste materials. The serene waters are no longer pristine, with the surrounding vegetation being overwhelmed by the mounting garbage.
He tweeted, “The pond in Sector 10, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai is filled with waste and causing health issues. Urgent clean-up is needed. Please take action.”
Residents of the area have raised alarms over the situation, expressing concerns about the potential health hazards stemming from the pollution. The accumulation of waste not only pollutes the water but also attracts pests and creates an unbearable stench, further degrading the quality of life for those living in proximity to the pond.
“This pond used to be a peaceful place, but now it's become an eyesore. The amount of garbage piling up here is shocking, and it's affecting our health and the environment. We need the authorities to step in and clean this up immediately,” said Usha Jha, a concerned resident of Sector 10, Kharghar.
Kalpesh Jadhav, another resident, said, “The situation is getting out of hand. The trash around the pond is not just an environmental issue but also a health hazard. We can’t ignore the stench and the pests it attracts anymore. It's high time the municipal corporation takes strict action to clean and maintain the area.”
Gayatri Rege, another Kharghar resident said, “It is disheartening to see the condition of this pond. What was once a beautiful spot is now filled with rubbish. We urge the Panvel Municipal Corporation to intervene and restore the pond before it’s too late.”
Local citizens are calling for immediate action from the authorities to clean up the pond and restore it to its former state. They are urging the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) to take swift measures to remove the waste, enforce stricter regulations against littering, and implement regular maintenance to prevent further degradation.
