Citizens respond positively amidst increased property tax rates

As the deadline for property tax payment approaches, the Panvel Municipal Corporation's (PMC) tax collection and taxation department has launched an intensive collection drive, garnering an unprecedented response from citizens. On Thursday, March 28th, the municipal coffers received a record-breaking payment of Rs.3.05 crores in property tax, marking the highest collection in a single day. Notably, Kharghar stands out as the top contributor, with a staggering Rs. 124.57 crores total tax collected from this ward alone.

The significance of property tax in facilitating urban development cannot be overstated, prompting dedicated efforts from all officers and staff within the tax collection department. A notable achievement was recorded in recovering property tax from defaulters who had received pre-seizure notices, with substantial amounts collected across all four wards under the guidance of Assistant Commissioner Swaroop Kharge, Tax Superintendent Mahesh Gaikwad, and Tax Superintendent Sunil Bhoir.

Recent developments in the High Court, where no stay has been granted to the municipal corporation regarding property tax levies within Panvel Municipal Corporation's (PMC) jurisdiction, have spurred citizens to promptly fulfill their tax obligations. This trend is evident across Kharghar, Kalamboli, Panvel, and Kamothe wards, with an increasing willingness among citizens to contribute to the city's development.

In line with the recommendations from the in-charge commissioner, collection teams have intensified efforts, including home visits and site inspections, to address property tax arrears. This proactive approach has yielded positive results, reflected in the rising compliance among citizens. Currently, 17 recovery teams are actively engaged in the municipal jurisdiction, issuing over 450 pre-seizure notices and 16 warrant notices to defaulting property holders.

While the Municipal Corporation had previously encouraged citizens to avail discounts and incentives for timely tax payments, a shift towards stricter measures against defaulters is now evident. Warrant notices are being issued promptly, accompanied by an arrest campaign to emphasize the seriousness of tax compliance.

Furthermore, with a 2 percent monthly increase in penalties for non-payment, citizens are urged through various channels, including rickshaw-mounted loudspeakers, to settle their property tax dues promptly. This concerted effort has led to a significant surge in daily tax payments, with over Rs. 1 crore being collected daily in the past week.

To facilitate tax payments, the corporation has established various municipal zones and introduced online payment options through the 'PMC TAX APP' mobile application and the official website panvelmc.org. Additionally, a 'Citizen Property Tax Payment Guide' has been prepared to assist property owners in navigating the online payment process.

For inquiries or assistance, property owners are encouraged to contact the toll-free helpline at 1800-5320-340. With two days remaining until the property tax deadline, citizens are urged to fulfill their obligations promptly to support the city's continued growth and development.
