The Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken a stern approach to address property tax defaulters, initiating the issuance of pre-seizure notices to the highest offenders. The notices have been sent to 100 industrial properties, 301 residential properties, 349 commercial properties, and a total of 750 defaulters. To carry out this task effectively, eight teams have been deployed across Panvel's four nodes, including Kharghar, Kalamboli, Kamothe, and Panvel.
Property tax plays a pivotal role in funding proposed municipal projects, and the court has not suspended its collection. Consequently, the municipal corporation is dedicated to ensuring property tax collection. The PMC has now escalated its efforts to recover property tax, starting with the highest arrears in the industrial, residential, and commercial sectors. Notices regarding the attachment and pre-seizure of immovable and movable properties have been issued. Property owners who do not pay their property tax after receiving pre-seizure notices may face the auctioning of their immovable properties. Eight teams, two for each ward, have been formed to issue these notices, and property owners have also been notified via SMS.
In this fiscal year, the PMC has seen a positive response from property owners, collecting Rs. 200 crores from April to October 19, 2023. This marks the highest-ever tax collection in a six-month period for the municipal corporation. Over the last four years, a total of INR 475 crores has been recovered. With a 2 percent monthly penalty for non-payment of property tax, citizens are increasingly motivated to fulfill their property tax obligations. Additionally, property owners receive a 2 percent discount when paying online, excluding government taxes.
To raise public awareness about property tax payment, the PMC is using loudspeakers mounted on rickshaws within the municipal area. Property owners can also take advantage of the 2 percent online payment discount by using the PMC TAX APP mobile app or visiting the website panvelmc.org.
Ganesh Deshmukh, Commissioner of Panvel Municipal Corporation, stressed the importance of property tax for proposed municipal works and urged citizens to cooperate by paying their property tax.
Deputy Commissioner Ganesh Shete, Tax Department, encouraged citizens to include their property ID (UPIC ID) during property transactions to quickly verify the payment of property tax.
Assistant Commissioner of the Tax Department, Sangram Roharkate, shared that the number of teams issuing notices to defaulters would be increased in the coming days, further intensifying the campaign.
Mahesh Gaikwad, Superintendent of Taxes in charge, provided information about updating mobile numbers for property-related matters. Property owners can send their Aadhaar card number to the toll-free number 18005320340 and the WhatsApp number 8669941488 for mobile number updates and property tax payments.
Sunil Bhoir, Superintendent of Taxes in charge, also highlighted the PMC's scheme that provides a 100% exemption from general tax to ex-servicemen and their widows. So far, 426 properties have benefited from this scheme, and those who haven't yet availed it are encouraged to submit their documents to the ward office.
