Release measures planned by NMMC
Navi Mumbai: The Morbe Dam, a critical water source for Navi Mumbai, is approaching full capacity, prompting the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) to issue a warning to residents along the river banks.
As of 1:00 PM on August 25, 2024, the Morbe Dam's water storage reached 185,151 million liters (d.l.h.m), with the water level at 87.40 meters, nearing the dam’s discharge threshold of 88.00 meters. Continuous rainfall in the dam's catchment area over the past two days has led to an increase in water levels, now at 87.85 meters. If rainfall persists, the dam could soon reach its maximum capacity.
In anticipation of potential water releases, the NMMC Water Supply Department has informed the Khalapur Tahsildar and local police administration. The dam's curved gates may be opened to release excess water into the Dhavari River bed if necessary, which could lead to a significant rise in water levels along the river.
Residents and officials in areas including Chowk, Jambhivali, Asare, Dharni, Tupgaon, Asroti, and Kopari have been advised to remain vigilant. The Tehsildar's office is expected to provide further instructions to ensure public safety, including prohibiting access to the riverbed and preventing swimming or entry into the flowing water.
