In a concerted effort to provide a dependable and satisfactory water supply to the citizens of Navi Mumbai, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has embarked on a systematic plan. The project outlines a precise schedule for water distribution, ward-wise, with the objective of offering uninterrupted service for 6 to 7 hours daily. The new schedule is being implemented on an experimental basis, with no alterations to the traditional morning and evening water distribution times.
Previously, the city faced water pressure issues in the morning and evening, as reservoirs across Navi Mumbai were simultaneously filled. To address this concern, the Water Supply Department, in close consultation with City Engineer Sanjay Desai, meticulously studied the water distribution system. A ward-wise filling schedule was designed and presented during a review meeting with Municipal Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar.
Under this new scheme, the implementation of the water supply system is underway, ensuring a more evenly distributed supply. Navi Mumbai, often referred to as a water-rich city, benefits from its Morbe dam project, which reached its full capacity on September 24. As of October 19, the water storage in Morbe dam stands at 184.38 MLD, equivalent to 96 percent of its capacity.
The city currently receives 450 dl of water from Morbe Dam daily. This water is then treated at the Bhokarpada water treatment centre, which has a capacity of 450 dl. Presently, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation receives 80 dl from Barvi Dam, managed by MIDC. However, the actual supply from MIDC falls short, ranging from 60 to 65 dl.
To compensate for the deficit in water supply, the water available from MIDC is redirected to the reservoir at Shil and distributed to specific areas, such as Digha, Airoli, and Ghansoli divisions, as well as various localities within MIDC. Citizens in these areas have reported inadequate and irregular water supply.
To alleviate the issue of untimely and insufficient water supply, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has initiated the construction of new reservoirs in areas like Turbhe Store, Hanuman Nagar, Indiranagar, Ganpatipada, and Katkaripada (Bhimnagar) within MIDC's jurisdiction.
Furthermore, in Ghansoli and Airoli, additional water is being supplied from the main channel of Morbe Dam to bridge the shortfall resulting from low MIDC supply. Efforts are ongoing to improve the water supply situation, and senior-level officials have been consistently urging Municipal Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar to address these challenges.
Despite the surplus water supply, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation emphasizes the need for responsible water use, given that citizens currently receive over 220 liters of water daily, surpassing the national standard of 135 liters per day.
The department's systematic planning aims to ensure a consistent and convenient water supply to the residents, mitigating issues related to irregular distribution and insufficient pressure. The new water reservoir filling schedule is set to balance the city's water supply management and provide residents with reliable service during both morning and evening hours. This water supply improvement initiative is currently in the experimental phase.
