NMMC issues alert as heavy rain predicted from May 22 to 24

Navi Mumbai: Heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, is likely to hit parts of Thane district and Navi Mumbai from May 22 to May 24, 2025. The Regional Meteorological Department, Mumbai, has issued an orange alert for the period.

In view of the forecast and the risk of adverse weather, Dr Kailas Shinde, commissioner, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, held an emergency meeting with department heads, officers and engineers. He instructed all departments to remain on high alert, check the availability and readiness of rescue equipment, and stay prepared to assist citizens in case of emergencies.

“Citizens are encouraged to follow updates from the official IMD website (https://mausam.imd.gov.in/) or the Mausam app, and not to trust or spread rumours. For verification of any news or alerts, contact the NMMC control room directly”, the civic chief said.

The NMMC disaster management department has appealed to all residents to stay alert and report any emergency using the contact numbers provided.

In light of the storm and lightning warnings, citizens are advised to follow these safety precautions:

·         Turn off and unplug electronic appliances like computers and televisions during lightning.

·         Avoid using landline phones or mobile phones during lightning activity.

·         Stay indoors during lightning storms. If outside, take shelter in a safe building.

·         Stay away from electric poles and avoid standing under tall trees.

·         If caught in an open area, crouch down with your head tucked into your knees.

·         Keep metal objects at a distance.

·         Download the "Damini" app to receive real-time lightning alerts.

·         Do not stand under trees or use electronic devices during rainfall with lightning.

·         Prefer shelter in a solid structure or building.
