Negligence leads to massive water wastage near Digha Railway Station

top-news

In a recurring tale of negligence, a significant water pipeline near Digha railway station suffered damage, resulting in the wastage of litres of water on Wednesday, March 27. This incident has not only sparked frustration among residents but also raised eyebrows at the lackadaisical response from the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC).

The NMMC, entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing development works for citizen facilities, has been under scrutiny following this incident. Development projects are underway across various locations, yet near Digha railway station on the Thane Belapur route, a grave oversight occurred. While the M/s Light Strong Company was conducting excavation work, a crucial pipe supplying water to Digha was carelessly struck by a JCB, causing the large-water pipe to rupture, leading to the loss of lakhs of litres of water.

Despite prompt notification to the relevant department, municipal officials failed to take decisive action against the contractor involved. Local residents expressed their dismay, highlighting a recurring issue where contractors seemingly commence work without adequate oversight or accountability.

One resident lamented, "With the tacit approval of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation officials, arbitrary contractors begin work at their convenience. During the excavation by the company, a water pipeline burst near Digha railway station, resulting in the wastage of millions of litres of water. However, responsibility cannot solely be attributed to the contractor or municipal corporation officials”.

“Water wastage should not be tolerated. In addition, now with the summer season starting such negligence should not be ignored. We hope NMMC takes action against such contractors”, said another resident.
