Navi Mumbai: DPS lake, once a favourite haunt of flamingos and an eco-sensitive hotspot, has been revived with NMMC laying the pipeline to facilitate the flow of intertidal water into the lake from the creek.

“As soon as the work of trench modification and pipe laying was done, water started flowing into the lake and since April 27, the lake is seen almost 85 per cent full,” an environmental activist said.

NMMC engineers laid a 600mm pipe inside the trench which was further lowered down to intertidal water from the creek to inundate the lake.

An earlier trench made in 2024 failed to adequately address the issue of inflow of water. It was dug again and made two feet deeper and a 600mm pipe installed to connect the creek and the lake.

City engineers also informed that one more pipe will be laid to ensure the lake got adequate supply of water.

No sooner had water started filling the lake, thousands of flamingos flocked to the lake turning it awash with pink.

City-based Save Flamingo Save Mangrove and Navi Mumbai Environmental Preservation Society had mounted a sustained campaign to revive the DPS lake.

“We would like to check the status of the water flow and level of water after May 5, when the height of the tides will be in normal range or say usual high tide, then only we would be able to conclude,” informed Sandeep Sarin, vice president, Navi Mumbai Environmental Preservation Society, said.

The Maharashtra State Wildlife Board declared the 30-acre DPS lake as a conservation reserve.
