Navi Mumbai International Airport Committee launches indefinite hunger strike over pending demands

top-news

The Navi Mumbai International Airport Committee has commenced an indefinite hunger strike in front of CIDCO Bhavan, advocating for a range of unresolved issues affecting project victims associated with the airport construction.

For the past four to five years, the committee has been actively pursuing resolutions through various forms of agitation, holding numerous meetings with CIDCO Corporation. However, their efforts have been met with consistent neglect, prompting the current protest.

Among the key demands put forth by the committee are the following:

 1. Naming Navi Mumbai International Airport after people’s leader D.B. Patil.

2. Compensation for fishermen impacted by the airport project, as traditional fishing grounds are being destroyed.

3. Employable training for unemployed youth from the 10 villages affected by the airport to secure jobs at the facility, along with certificates recognizing their status as project victims.

4. Contractual agreements with companies operating at the airport for job placements.

5. Immediate allotment of housing plots to project victims from Waghivali village, whose homes have been demolished without compensation.

6. Continuation of house rent allowances at market rates for those displaced by CIDCO.

7. Increased financial assistance for homeowners in Talao Pali and Chinchpada, who have received inadequate support.

Previously, a Dhadak Morcha was scheduled to be held at the Ministry on July 1 to highlight the grievances of the affected individuals. However, in response to government requests, the march was cancelled. A meeting took place in Shambhuraje Desai's hall, during which officials were directed to make positive decisions regarding the demands. Despite this, two months have passed without any significant action.

As a result of the inaction, the committee's office bearers initiated their hunger strike, calling attention to their plight and urging the government to address their pressing concerns. The situation remains critical as the committee continues to seek justice for the victims of the Navi Mumbai International Airport project.
